Water Lily in the Morning - 31" x 41"
This piece is currently on display and for sale at Artists@Work Studio & Gallery. Please direct all interest in the painting to them.
Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe as a child, I have always been fascinated with the insides of flowers. This lovely water lily (aka Nymphaea odoranta) was a study in painting white on white silk. There are no white silk dyes....the space must be left white and shades of gray and other reflected colors bring out the beauty of the flower. The original photo was found on Pixabay.
Materials: 16mm Habotai high quality silk, varnished on to 1 3/4" gallery canvas. Water Lily in the Morning is enhanced by a beautiful solid wood black floater frame - #CF5 from pictureframes.com.
The process: The Karen Sistek Magic Sizing stop flow method was used to treat silk before painting with Jacquard Red Label French silk dyes and some Dupont Silk dyes. The silk was then steamed, washed, and ironed before carefully varnishing on to canvas. An extra coat of UV quality varnish was the last coat and enhances the sheen of the natural silk. I plan to share more of the process in Stories in the future so please check back in or sign up for my news updates on my home page.
