Water Lily in the Morning - 30" x 40"
Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's style of looking deep into the interior of flowers and making something small larger than life. As a child, I have always been fascinated with the insides of flowers. Been stung by a bee on my nose several times!
This lovely water lily (aka Nymphaea odoranta) was a study in painting white on white silk. There are no white silk dyes....the space must be left white and shades of gray and other reflected colors bring out the beauty of the flower.
Materials: 16mm Habotai high quality silk, varnished on to 1 3/4" gallery canvas. Water Lily in the Morning is enhanced by a beautiful solid wood black floater frame.
The process: The original photo was found on Pixabay. The Karen Sistek Magic Sizing stop flow method was used to treat silk before painting with Jacquard Red Label French silk dyes and some Dupont Silk dyes. The silk was then steamed, washed, and ironed before carefully varnishing on to canvas. An extra coat of UV quality varnish was the last coat. The last coat protects and enhances the sheen of the natural silk.
